Jason Peter Wilson, aged 51, died from multiple injuries sustained in a single-vehicle motor crash on the Huon Highway, Tasmania. Toxicological analysis revealed elevated levels of methylamphetamine, MDMA, and cannabis in his system at the time of the crash. The coroner found these drugs undoubtedly contributed to the crash, with probable distraction from mobile telephone use as an additional factor. Weather and road conditions were not contributory factors, and no mechanical defects were identified in the vehicle. This case highlights the significant risks of driving while under the influence of stimulant drugs and the impaired judgment and reaction times that result. Mr Wilson died when the Holden Captiva he was driving north on the Huon Highway near Port Huon left the road after negotiating a left-hand bend. The vehicle entered the roadside drain, continued for approximately 34 metres through and along the drain before impacting with a tree. Mr Wilson died instantly.

Toxicological analysis of samples taken from his body at autopsy showed elevated levels of methylamphetamine, MDMA and THC (the active constituent in cannabis). These drugs undoubtedly contributed to the happening of the crash. He was affected by drugs and probably distracted by his mobile telephone in the immediate lead up to the crash.

Weather and road conditions did not, in my view, cause or contribute to the happening of the crash.

There were no mechanical defects identified with the vehicle which could have caused or contributed to the happening of the crash.

There are no suspicious circumstances, anomalies or inconsistencies associated with Mr Wilson’s death. There is no evidence of the involvement of any other person or vehicle.

Comments and Recommendations The circumstances of Mr Wilson’s death are not such as to require me to make any comments or recommendations pursuant to Section 28 of the Coroners Act 1995.

I convey my sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr Wilson.
